ATC swap at That Craft Place

We have a swap every month on TCP’s Natter & Chatter page (fab group, that one!).  The first one I participated in was the Christmas swap where I had the fabulous honour of being Lisa Horton’s partner.  This was great in the sense that I got an amazing pressie from the Boss Lady (Lisa owns TCP) and absolutely terrifying as I had to make something!  Talk about intimidation.  I have received absolutely stunning swaps every month and it has pushed me to be a better crafter.  March’s was an ATC swap with the instructions to use brown and turquoise.   There was an ebi (even better if for those non-teachers) to use an non-crafty item.  I got this made in record time…even before the swap partners were posted.  Unfortunately, it took a long time to get him to the post office! lol  I kept painting and stamping and inking and using texture paste and gilding wax until I was rather pleased with him.  This is Stuart (good name) the Punk Giraffe from Octopode.  He spins and has a brass piercing in his nose.  IMG_0005

A little dab will do you…

This fortnight’s challenge at That Craft Place is sponsored by All Dressed Up!  I love this image called Looking Gorgeous.  Prince Charming’s printer was out of black ink when I printed it and so I ended up doing a no lines colouring thing without planning to! lol

I used DecoArts paints in browns to paint the frame.  I then used a Marianne die to make a paper mask that I sponged gold paint through.  The same gold paint was used on the cheesecloth (lower left corner).  I pulled out a number of white flowers from my stash (most from Lisa’s though) and started spraying them with Dylusions to match the colours I used colouring.  This worked way better than I imagined!  Love them and finally used the chocolate brown dylusions! lol There’s a bit of burlap hiding behind the bow.  I love the ribbons from the shop…they gave me some lovely texture.  I did dab a bit of gold paint on the one to tie it all together.  I always struggle to use flowers (but not in the buying part) on my projects, but I’m rather chuffed with how this all turned out.

I learned a few things whilst making this…mostly about glue! lol  I used DecoArts Faux Finishing Medium to glue the ribbons, cheesecloth, and burlap to the frame.  This stuff is fantastic!  It dries clear and it’s perfect for ribbon and fabric.  The other fab glue was Collall’s Decopage.  I used this thick glue for the flowers…it smooshes (technical word) around the 3D object and holds it in place.

What’s your favourite glue and why?

Art Journal Classes

Back in November I signed up for a set of 4 classes with Neil Walker.  The first one wasn’t until the first Sunday in March.  Do you know how long that was to wait?  An eternity I tell ya!  Well worth the wait though.

The first class we decorated the front and back covers (learning a number of techniques) and did did a painty background technique with masks.  Last class we learned even more painty backgrounds using tape, tissue paper, embossed card, and magazines.

Have you ever made an art journal?

Scooter

March’s ATC swap theme was ‘Furry Friends.’  I recently won a digi of my dog, Scooter (see my blog header!), from The East Wind.  I love Kyra’s style and was over the moon to get a custom digi.  When I found out what the theme was I knew exactly what I wanted to do!

My favourite kind of challenge

This fortnight’s challenge over at That Craft Place’s Challenge Blog is ‘Anything Goes.’

I wanted to do a ‘canvas’ type thing with these fab wings from Lisa’s.  First I painted them gold DecoArts paint.  Then I used their two step crackle and brown paint.  I coloured The Pilot from DDD with copics in brown and turquoise.  To help tie the wings and the image together I swiped turquoise paint across the wings and rubbed back with the crafter’s most useful tool…a baby wipe! (I alsow rubbed and swiped turquoise on the bottle cap) I also sponged gold paint onto the wood cogs.  I  played around with a number of embellishments from That Craft Place until I was happy with both the selection and placement, including the fabulous chain.

My second project are a set of altered wooden balls I picked up from the brilliant charity shop next to Lisa’s (another reason to visit ladies!).  I forgot to take a before picture, but here’s a during picture with a coat of gesso.

Even after two coats of gesso and the first coat of red paint you could see the black swirls.  I thought that this might be okay, but they did disappear after a few more layers.  I added some die cut flourishes (Cheery Lyn and Marianne) to for some dimension and then started to add red paint (True Red, Primary Red, Santa Red – spot a pattern?- and my new fav, Deep Burgundy) here and there making sure to not leave any white showing.  Once I was happy with how the reds looked, I added splashes of gold .  In one spot, I did a kind of zed shaped squiggle to hide an oops.  I prefered that look and will do that shape in the future.  I also did the whole swipe and rub back thing with black paint…especially around the flourishes.  Lastly, I covered it with Triple Thick Glaze which made them look like glass.  These £2 charity shop finds are now comfortable on my mantle!
