Summer Lovin’

This fortnight’s challenge at That Craft Place is Summer Colours.  This grungy girl really struggled with this challenge!  So, I cheated and used the summer atc I created for the latest swap over in TCP’s Natter page.  (If you’re not a member of this fab group, I highly recommend joining.)  My MIL helped me with the idea since even that was challenging for me!

The Past is Prologue - summer coloursSo, I used crackle texture paste on one of TCP’s grey board atcs to create the sand at the bottom and stucco texture paste for the sea and sky.  I painted with appropriate colours, including a touch of gold in the sand, trying hard to be uneven.  I hate uneven!  Hopefully, my clouds look a bit random.  My friend, Mickie, recently told me that lots of people struggle with random and to do things in 3 for random.  A formula for random!  Woohoo!  What I’ve been searching for! I drew the brolly (me!  Who struggles with stick people!) and used silicon glue to give it some height.

Can’t wait to see your challenge over at That Craft Place Challenge Blog.

Mirror, Mirror

who is the fairest of them all?  Mark Gould?  Who’s he?  lol  I’m lucky enough to live near enough to regularly take classes with him.  If you ever have the chance to do one of his classes, don’t hesitate!  This is the result of the latest class using the new Fluid Media Line from DecoArts.  It started life as a boring mirror from Ikea.  All the extra texture bits are the new laser cuts from That Craft Place.  Prince Charming recently said that my projects should be more ‘Erin’ so I added my initials! lol

The Past is Prologue - mirror

Anybody Home?

This is another one of Lisa’s fabulous tags.  The holes made me think of windows with light spilling out of them.  The Past is Prologue - lights

I coloured ‘The Kid’ from The Octopode Factory with copics to match my embossed and painted bottom layer.  I also embossed and painted the top layer and sponged some yellow paint around the windows to simulate the light coming out.  I used alpha stamps for the sentiment.

Old New Ways to Think

Back a million years ago, my riding coach used to say to me ‘Don’t be so scared of making a mistake that you don’t do anything!’  (I used to ride in the hunter classes and instead of making a correction (because I was afraid of making a mistake) I wouldn’t do anything and then it would snowball into a disaster…I had to learn to try…I didn’t get in trouble for doing the wrong thing if I at least did SOMETHING!)  This is a problem in my wider world too and I often think of my coach’s advice, hence, the title of this post.

cracked heartThis is one of the new tags from That Craft Place Laser Cuts. I embossed the bottom layer with my x-cut machine (on offer at the mo from TCP), painted with yellow and orange, sanded back to reveal the first coat on the highlights, thought it was too bright and wanted to try a black wash, but am all out of black paint so tried soot distress stain which made it this lovely rich dark colour (which was then a bit too dark when I finished off the next layer so I dry brushed with white).  The top layer is done with stucco texture paste (love this stuff…used it one of Mark Gould’s classes and had to have it!)  then there’s lots of colours of paint and touch of yellow dylusions too (looks like I put some yellow dylusions on the bottom layer around the edges), and some more white dry brushing to bring out the textures.  The heart was liberally spread with crackle texture paste (DecoArt), painted with deep burgandy (my fav colour at the moment), and wait for it…dry brushed with white paint.  I love the saying (see above, lol) from PaperArtsy and stamped it brown archival ink on cream card.  I glued it all together with DecoPage glue from DecoArts and then used that to seal everything because I love the finish.

Mistletoe Heart

Several weeks ago, I took a fabulous class with Mark Gould at That Craft Place.  We did these amazing clocks using chalk paint.  The best part was I learned about embossing grey board, which is now my new obsession and has required a new tool…the x-cut embossing machine (currently on offer at TCP) which I love.  We also did this wonderful sanding back technique.  So, back to my project…I first painted in grey, then burgandy, finally sanding back to revel the grey on the high points of the embossing.  I think this technique makes it look like a vintage metal decoration.  The leaves were done with Mark’s infamous 3 colours of paint and sand until your arms ache technique and 3 shades of green.  Lastly, I painted the berries white with a layer of citrus (a transparent colour from DecoArt), plopped texture paste on top to give them depth, and doused them in glitter because Christmas means sparkle. 😉

Mistletoe Heart from TCP

Christmas is my favourite holiday and I can’t wait to put this up with the other Chrimbo decorations.

I’m pretty sure no one is surprised that everything came from That Craft Place (including the glitter which I bought on my very first visit 10 months ago!)  which is, of course, the best craft shop evah!  Well, that’s my (and countless others) opinion!

My anchor holds

This fortnight’s challenge at That Craft Place’s Challenge Blog is Nautical.  Unlike the English, I did not grow up by the sea nor do I get twitchy if I don’t see the sea every couple of weeks.  (True story:  When I first moved here, a teacher at school asked me how far I lived from Vancover and the Atlantic.  When I tried to explain, she quite bluntly said ‘I don’t think I could live that far from the sea.  I need to see it every so often.’  I thought that was one of her many quirks until a few weeks later on one of our first dates Prince Charming needed to go to Eastbourne to see the sea.  “I can’t go to long without seeing the sea, don’t you?’  Um…NO!)

So when I saw with utter dismay that there was a nautical theme coming up I was in a dead panic.  Finally, I remembered moaning about a hymn being sung in landlocked Alberta that kept using nautical metaphors.  I had said that past the first verse I didn’t have a clue what I was singing (really making a joyful noise) and perhaps we should have a look at what we choosing.  I can’t remember what hymn it was, but my ex always teased me it was ‘My anchor holds.’  Aha!  A light bulb moment!

my anchor holdscanvas1So lots to look at.  The sand is texture paste painted brown(s) and dry brushed with white.  The wood bits are actually thingys that came with the canvas stamped with brown archival ink and Penny Black alpha stamps.  That anchor is one of the amazing laser cuts from That Craft Place painted with teals, turquoises, and a touch of orange and brown.  The water is blues with PaperArtsy stamps in black, blue, and plum archival inks, topped with DecoArts Triple Thick (forgot how much I loves that stuff).  The white rub on lace is supposed to be waves…not sure about that bit.  The sky is a blue grey that I mixed up with, surprise surprise, light blue and grey paint.  I had some brown water (from washing out brushes from another project) that put in a few places.  Blue archival ink was used on PaperArtsy stamps and white paint was used for clouds.  The boat is from Kastlekraft and stamped on tissue paper.  I had a bit of trouble getting the tissue paper to disappear, but eventually got there.

Almost everything is from TCP, including the confidence to tackle something absolutely new for me…a canvas!

And now they shall have some pie…

The third little kitten found his mittens too!blackboard mittens

I had this brilliant idea to paint the mittens black and then used DecoArts Blackboard medium to turn them into a mini blackboard.  I used a chalk pen to write Maths Rocks because it just does!  Again, the back opens up and the mittens are removable to hang on the tree.  The papers are from a digital pack. The awesome snowflake border is a crafts too die.

I’m a secondary teacher (maths … go figure!) and we rarely get Christmas gifts.  I thought this would make a cute teacher gift…little Johnny could write his teacher’s name on the front or something.  (Ask your big kid who his favourite teacher is and make them something small…it will mean the world to the teacher!  I promise!)

Birthday Wishes

Through Facebook I know of a special little girl who’s birthday it was last Saturday.  This was the card I sent her. IMG_0085

The fairy (with red hair just like the little girl) is from The Greeting Farm and coloured with copics. I added glitter to the wings and used my favourite die from LaLaLand (heart banner).  I hope she liked it!

2nd Kitty found their mittens

The other day I posted a card I made with grey board mittens from TCP.  Here’s another one that’s a touch more masculine (other than the bow with fab ribbon alos from TCP).  The back of the card opens up and you can remove the mittens to hang on tree.  We all have those people in our lives that deserve more than a card, but that you don’t want to get into the whole gift giving dilemma a la Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory

wood mittens

I painted the mittens gold then used the weathered wood product from DecoArts.  I anxiously waited for the cracks to appear after applying a custom shade of green (festive green with a bit of black).  I also put flower soft on the fluffy bit of the mittens.  Everything but the Whimsy sentiment from TCP.

The Aviator’s Adventure

That Craft Place is now selling the most amazing exclusive alterable items.  Lisa is designing all kinds of unique grey board and mdf items.  There are keys, books, mittens, reindeer, dogs, flowers, clouds, beach items, etc, etc, etc.  She’ll also do custom orders all for a very reasonable price. IMG_0089

This padlock book cover was just too perfect for this fortnight’s challenge of Autumn/Steampunk over at TCP challenge blog.  As soon as I saw that keyhole, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.  First I painted with teal and brown paint…trying really hard to not be too even.  Do you know how hard that is for a mathematician?  I don’t do random! lol  I used PaperArtsy stamps  and distress ink (vintage photo and walnut ink) in a somewhat random fashion.  The do not look inside sentiment is also PaperArtsy.  I do love PaperArtsy…think I could buy them all! I tried to age the keyhole with some distress ink.  I rubbed a bit of gold paint into the cracks that formed from the one step crackle that I applied here and there.  I did rub a bit of gold in other spots to lighten it all up as it all a bit darker than I wanted.  I edged the outside in black archival ink too.  The adventure bulb was securely attached with one of my new fav glues…DecoArt’s Decopage.  Love that stuff!

IMG_0095

I used Kaiserkraft paper inside.  The image is the fabulous The Aviator from DitzieDigiDesigns coloured with my trusty copics and aged with distress inks.  I painted the handle with two tones of brown and used one of the same stamps from the front to tie it together. IMG_0096I had a bit of an oops with the gold paint… there was some dried on my nonstick sheet and it seemed to adhere itself while the satin varnish was drying on the back.  Again, in my attempt to embrace the random, I left it.  I’d really like to paint over it though! lol  I got decopage on somewhere it wasn’t supposed to be (I’m glue impaired) so just used it to seal the whole thing.  It left a lovely matt, silky smooth finish.  Rather a happy accident!IMG_0097
