This fortnight’s challenge at That Craft Place’s Challenge Blog is Nautical. Unlike the English, I did not grow up by the sea nor do I get twitchy if I don’t see the sea every couple of weeks. (True story: When I first moved here, a teacher at school asked me how far I lived from Vancover and the Atlantic. When I tried to explain, she quite bluntly said ‘I don’t think I could live that far from the sea. I need to see it every so often.’ I thought that was one of her many quirks until a few weeks later on one of our first dates Prince Charming needed to go to Eastbourne to see the sea. “I can’t go to long without seeing the sea, don’t you?’ Um…NO!)
So when I saw with utter dismay that there was a nautical theme coming up I was in a dead panic. Finally, I remembered moaning about a hymn being sung in landlocked Alberta that kept using nautical metaphors. I had said that past the first verse I didn’t have a clue what I was singing (really making a joyful noise) and perhaps we should have a look at what we choosing. I can’t remember what hymn it was, but my ex always teased me it was ‘My anchor holds.’ Aha! A light bulb moment!
So lots to look at. The sand is texture paste painted brown(s) and dry brushed with white. The wood bits are actually thingys that came with the canvas stamped with brown archival ink and Penny Black alpha stamps. That anchor is one of the amazing laser cuts from That Craft Place painted with teals, turquoises, and a touch of orange and brown. The water is blues with PaperArtsy stamps in black, blue, and plum archival inks, topped with DecoArts Triple Thick (forgot how much I loves that stuff). The white rub on lace is supposed to be waves…not sure about that bit. The sky is a blue grey that I mixed up with, surprise surprise, light blue and grey paint. I had some brown water (from washing out brushes from another project) that put in a few places. Blue archival ink was used on PaperArtsy stamps and white paint was used for clouds. The boat is from Kastlekraft and stamped on tissue paper. I had a bit of trouble getting the tissue paper to disappear, but eventually got there.
Almost everything is from TCP, including the confidence to tackle something absolutely new for me…a canvas!
