A different type of Easter Egg

Oh the irony! Many of my teamies over at That Craft Place don’t normally do Easter or Easter cards and yet made the most amazing creations.  Now, I love Easter, it’s my second favourite holiday after Christmas and is actually more significant to me than Christmas.  Yet, I’m the one who made something rather frivolous and irrelevant to the true meaning of the holiday.

Toad & Magic

My mum’s Easter Egg Hunts live on in family lore.  They were truly epic!  We used to have to know how many she hid so that we knew to keep looking and even then we’d find the odd one days, weeks, months later!  Usually hidden in plain sight! One year she thought I was too old and didn’t buy any chocolate eggs.  I got up and asked if she was done and could I come down.  She ended up hiding these horrible pink and yellow (35 years later and I can still remember that’s how epic her hunts were!) bunny shaped sweets/candies that were supposed to be soft but had gone hard.  They were awful…so awful that my dad who loved sweets didn’t even eat them hence them still being around to hide!  The pleasure was in the hunt not the reward with me mum’s hunts! lol

IMG_0040Back to the challenge!  I bought this rather hideous basket at Poundland (a wonderful source of things to alter) for, well, a pound. I then Andy Skinnerised it using texture paste, stucco texture paste, a stencil from TCP, cosmic shimmer guiding wax in Autumn Bronze, and a shed load of DecoArt products.  After gessoing and putting the texture paste through the angel stencil, I painted it grey with the thought of following this technique. That didn’t quite happen!  I used Umber antiquing cream because I don’t have the black for some reason. The Quint gold made it quite orangey so I did a black wash ala Mark Gould, but I’m not quite as good at that as him! lol

Work in progress!

Work in progress!

At this point, I was unhappy with how it looked, but didn’t know what to do to fix it.  One of the things about buying from a small shop is the incredible support you get.  You can’t put a price on that…Lisa usually is the same price as others, although occasionally those who sell from their kitchen tables, and thus don’t have the overhead costs associated with a bricks and mortar shop, undercut.  I just don’t think it’s worth saving a few pence and not getting the support.  I asked what to do and Mark Gould and Claudia Neubacher, both on DecoArt’s international dt, responded with the best ideas!  They are both part of TCP Facebook group if you ever want to pick their amazing brains.

They suggested adding texture sand, which I substituted stucco paste for, through the stencil and then using English oxide red (think that’s the name), quint gold, and a touch of turquoise to make the rust.  Claudia even went so far as to link some pinterest pics for me!  I did that and then painted the angel with raw umber…didn’t like that.  Added oxide antiquing cream and wiped back…much better! Dry brushed with turquoise & quint gold, rubbed with cosmic shimmer autumn bronze,  dry brushed with old gold and then a touch of black.  Phew!  Loved the results, but now it was evening and I couldn’t take pictures for the blog! lol

Toad & Magic

I think what I love about this project is that it isn’t strictly an Easter basket…I can use year round.

Toad & Magic

These were Styrofoam ones bought from the uber posh Poundland!  I don’t have the Acrylic mister in black (yet!) so tried stippling carbon black on gessoed eggs with a stencil brush.  I then brushed quint gold over and viola!  Gorgeous rusty eggs! (I’m sure there’s an infertility metaphor for me in there somewhere…laugh instead of cry over it, eh?).

When I like saw this like fab Betty image I like totally knew like what I like wanted to like make with it.

Toad & Magic

My sister bought me a Sony walkman right when they came out.  I was so proud of it despite the limited battery life.  Remember that?  Needing a bunch of AA batteries and them only lasting a short while?

I designed (yup, me!) this gift voucher/card holder and cut it on my cameo.  I’m so pleased with how it turned out and think it would be super cute with a iTunes gift voucher, although you might have to explain why it’s funny to those uner the age of, like 30? lol

Toad & Magic

Betty is coloured with copics and the papers are from my stash (bought them ages and ages ago…like over 2 years ago!).

When’s your birthday, again?

My best friend, the one who’s a keeper from the last post, has an old school address book…always has, always will.  The problem lies when she loses it.  It’s almost funny when she rings up asking for someone’s number and you reply with ‘I don’t know it!  I always ask you!’  She’s also the one that’s kept the best communication with our large group of friends from university, even before Facebook.  Actually, I think she dislikes Facebook because it means she gets less real letters…she’s a big fan of snail mail!

Okay, after that lengthy waffle…here’s the connection between her and this post…I can totally see her using this!  Again, this was one of the projects I did with the awesome Betty images.  This one is called Oops I Forgot.  I think I’ll be using her quite a bit..damn Fibro Fog!

Toad & Magic

She’s so much fun to colour and I swear I’m a better colourist after playing with these images! She’s done with copics, of course, and the paper is from a Bazzil pack.  The book is a birthday book with pockets for cards, a spot for stamps, and of course those all important addresses that I get from Renata! 😉  The sentiment comes with the set and says…”I’m confused about your birthday.  Is it on the same date each year?”

Cooking up a memo board

So this was a Betty image that I thought I could live without.  I don’t do a lot of cooking in this country (did when I lived in Canada) and only know one foodie here.  Where would I ever use this image?

Every so often I get a flash of insight and this came to mind!  My best friend, Renata (maker of yummy cinnamon buns…nom), was the inspiration for this.  We have that easy friendship…go months without speaking (she lives in Canada), then spend a week together 24/7 without getting on each other’s nerves.  I met her almost 25 years ago and instantly knew she was a keeper.  Just like the Betty image because now I have tons of ideas…watch this space as they say! lol

Toad & Magic

Betty is coloured with copics of course.  I found the friendship recipe online and then made a card on my silhouette with an aged background.  The papers are from a DoCrafts pad and suit the theme a treat.  The magnets are from a cooking grab bag from That Craft Place.    The heart was cut on my silhouette and then covered with blue frantage.

It’s never too late…

This week’s challenge over at That Craft Place is charming.  Here’s my project.

Toad & MagicI recently had the good fortune to take a workshop with the incomparable Andy Skinner.  This piece uses numerous techniques learned there.  I put part of a piece of embossed card on the right hand side and then used texture paste in both crackle and stucco on the rest.  I stuck a key (my charm) into the crackle paste.  I gessoed everything once the texture paste dried.  Then I used quint gold and magenta in the fluid paints from Deco Arts in bits’n pieces.  I then covered everything in white antiquing cream (omg!  this stuff is amazing) and wiped back with a dampish cloth when it had dried.  I painted the mdf heart with turquoise paint and added a pit of quint gold and magenta here and there.  There’s also some white antiquing cream to tie it into the other part.  The sentiment was done with vintage photo distress ink and then brushed with the same on Lisa’s amazing super smooth paper.  Now, the best part the big bite actually punches through the 4mm mdf panel for me to attach the sentiment with brads!  I also painted florist wire with the magenta paint for the hangy thingy (technical term there).  I bought all the paint, texture paste, antiquing cream, embellishments, mdf, paper, stamps, and embossing folders from my fav shop…That Craft Place! 😉

Princess & Warrior

I’m in love with the new line of Betty rubber stamps available from Creative Expressions.  This one is called Fight Betty.  I used an A4 DoCrafts zebra embossing folder on a greyboard door hanger from That Craft Place.  I painted it with two colours of pink paint and sanded back to reveal the first colour.  Betty is, of course, coloured with copics.  I did up the sentiment using my cameo (love that I can do that so easily).  The heart is from Cheery Lyn and the crown is a free Tattered Lace that I got when I was at Ally Pally.

A Fairy Upcycled Cheese Box

I used Fairy Rose one of the new rubber stamps available from Creative Expressions to turn a cheese box into a trinket box.  Think it might be a lovely pressie for me mum. Toad & MagicCopics, paper (echo park), ribbon, pearl trim, and flowers (I used flowers!) all from That Craft Place.  Fun fact:  I bought the ribbon the first time I visited TCP back inn  early October 2013. (I remember the date because it was a life changing event! lol)

Steampunk Betty

Toad & Magic

Recently I got a chance to play with this amazing new line of rubber stamps from Creative Expressions.  I had such a blast!  They are about 5″ high so no teeny tiny bits to try and shade and highlight! lol

As soon as I saw this fantastic image, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.  The hot air ballon is a file from the silhouette shop and was surprisingly easy to put together following the tutorial, however all that inking of edges drove me mad! lol

Of course, Betty is coloured with copics.  This sounds insane, but I think colouring all the Bettys in this release (see upcoming posts! lol) has improved my colouring.  She is just so much fun and inspiring!

Perfect Life

Naughty dt member alert!  I’m alive!  I’m also a bit under the weather and haven’t had the motivation to blog.  I have, however, been able to craft most days and have lots to show you all over the next few weeks.

This is my project for the new challenge over at That Craft Place.  Our theme is Anything Goes/Mother’s Day.

Toad & MagicI’m well pleased with how this turned out!  My living room is ecru and red and this goes perfectly in it.  A while ago I won a challenge and the prize was these scrummy bits from Tando.  As soon as I opened the package I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them!  I added some stucco texture paste to the frame and clock in random places.  I then painted them grey and black with the add dab of green to make them look aged.  I highlighted the texture with cosmic guilding waxes in gold, green, and autumn bronze too.  The canvas is done in various shades of decoart reds.  Then I sponged black, grey, and green paint through a doily stencil.  The cirlces and lines have just black paint to make it a bit different to the doily parts.  The sentiment, splatter and flower are from PaperArtsy.  The white and black flowers were made with my cammie…so easy and I’ve started to make more! lol

Paper, paints, texture paste, ink, cameo, stamps, and stencils all from That Craft Place.  The confidence to tackle this also came from all my interactions with people associated somehow with the shop! 😉

toad & magicYou really should head over to the blog because my fellow teamies, all so very talented, have come up with some amazing things.
