Apparently, that’s the intended effect

This fortnight’s challenge at That Craft Place is Shabby Chic.  I’ve also been chosen for another term on the DT.  I’m so pleased!  It was a nerve wrecking couple of weeks waiting for the decision.  I love being on there.  Such a fantastic shop and my teamies, past and present, are the best!

Recently, whilst cleaning, I broke the decroative bowl that we have beside the front door where we put all the crap from our pockets, Scooter’s lead, the keys, etc.  We needed a new catch-all and fast!  Maths/Crafty girl to the rescue!

I bought these fantastic paper-mache trays from the one and only That Craft Place when they came in last year with no idea what I was going to do with them!  Don’t tell me I’m the only crafty girl to do that! lol  It was a set of countless trays, well maybe not quite, but seriously, I still have quite a few left after using 3! lol

tray5I painted the tray with grey acrylic paint with a daub of Prussian Blue here and there to look like the tray was blue metal underneath.  I then decopaged a vintage style napkin onto the bottom.  Covered everything with a couple of generous coats of DecoArt’s decopage.  Then, I used umber antiquing cream to make it look old in the corners and under the rim.

I didtray4 similar things with these two trays, but used vintage images on ricepaper instead of a napkin and red paint, obviously, instead of grey.  Just in case you’re colour blind! I also did a wash of Payne’s grey & Quin Gold to age and blend the images into the trays.Toad & Magic

Before I got them up on the wall, a couple of times Prince Charming said they looked really great.  One of the times I said, oh, the red ones are going up on the wall above the hall table (beside the front door).  He replied with, but they look like you just bought them in antiques shop.  (He’s rather anti-shabby chic…he likes things to look new!)  I said that was the point! lol

Toad & MagicWhen I did get them up, I asked what he thought.  “They’re really nice.  They look like old trays, but apparently, that’s the intended effect!”  It’s a good thing he’s Prince Charming in other ways! 😉
