Dancing with the Muse

Toad & MagicI recently came across this pin.  It totally inspired me!  With this journal page, I had no plan or direction other than to try using the sprays (in colours I have) in a similar manner to the video.  When it came time to choice a quote, this one really spoke to me since I really did just go with what my muse told me to try next! This also works with this fortnight’s challenge over at That Craft Place – LAYERS.

Instead of a long boring bit of waffle, I’m just going to list the layers starting at the top just like an archaeologist at a dig site. 😉

Sentiment – Dylusions for the Dancing and a typewriter font for the rest.

Birds (scribble birds from Dina Wakely) stamped on book paper and coloured with yellow oxide and cobalt teal fluid acrylics.

Hessian (huge packs from TCP)

Coffee Rings stamp from Ditzie Designs (aka TCP) in black archival ink.

Turquoise (this one has a shimmer/blingy effect) and purple media misters from DecoArts.

Texture paste through a new stencil from TCP (that I got in my latest DT pack…epic stencil!)

Gesso in random length strokes (utterly hard for this maths girl to do random and not make everything even!)

Book pages glued onto TCP super smooth using DecoArt Decopauge.  Love that stuff!

All products procured and available from That Craft Place.

Mad Max Swap

Toad & Magic

Over at That Craft Place we have a monthly swap.  May’s swap’s theme was Mad Max and atcs.  Since my atc was a bit of a different take on the theme, I made a larger piece that was perhaps more on topic.Toad & Magic

Octopode Factory image coloured with copics on TCP’s super smooth.  Embossed mirri card with DecoArt antiquing creams and Andy Skinner’s ‘dirty wash’ which is a mix of payne’s grey and quin gold with faux finishing medium.

Toad & Magic

I got this image from a declutter group on FB and can’t remember the company name if I did know it.  The film strip behind Max holds a quote from the film. The cogs are Cheery Lyn dies.

Bloomin’ Art

One night as I was falling asleep, I thought of this layout/composition.  In my latest DT pack from That Craft Place, I got a sun stencil.  Perfect! I also used a cloud stencil for the first time that I bought last summer! 😉

I put Toad & Magictexture paste on the bottom of the heart and scribbled back and forth with a chop stick to add more texture.  I also applied texture paste using the sun stencil.  I painted the grass using two tones of green DecoArt’s Traditions and the sky was done with, surprise! surprise! blue. lol  I really didn’t like the sun when it was just yellow so I added some orange, which was better, but still not quite right.  I ended up putting the stencil back on and spritzing DoCraft’s gold spray on whiToad & Bloomch made it all shimmery and pretty. Then I stenciled white paint through the cloud stencil.  Once that was dry, I put the cloud stencil back in place and painted on some of the crackle glaze from DecoArts.  I also took a very small paintbrush and dotted pink, blue, purple, and red on in a random as possible for me way.  I so struggle with random being a maths girl.  Next came a layer of red oxide antiquing cream which I mostly wiped off when it dried.  I painted the edge of the heart with old gold acrylic and then dry brushed my favourite, quin gold fluid media acrylic, round the edge of the heart and round the sun.  I really like how that defined the sun, so I dry brushed some carbon black from the edge of the grass to define the horizon. I did the same on the little hanging plaque minus the texture paste.  I stamped Art in Bloom twice on it…once in blue to create a shadow and then again in black, both are Archival ink.  I was going to use a PaperArtsy flower stamp (from the same set as the sentiment), but the scale was off and it didn’t quite work.  Then I pulled out one of my zombies from my Walking Dead project.  This one didn’t have to much ‘blood’ so I was able to clean her up and glue her in place.  Lastly, I attached the plaque to the heart with chain and brads.  Did you know you can punch holes in Lisa’s mdf with a Big Bite?  It’s fabulous!

…and I’m constantly making new discoveries

discoveriesI had lots of fun making this journal page that still hasn’t made it into the journal (more on that later).  I made the background by brayering paints and then stamping images from Tim Holtz.  At the workshop with Claudia, she said to always place things on top of other things so that it doesn’t look like stuff just fell there by accident.  I’d never thought of that before, but it makes a lot of sense and I think a lot of difference!  Hence, the cheesecloth from under the mdf heart with the cool rusty wings (I just had to have them probably close to 18 months ago and finally used one from the pack of 3! Tell me I’m not alone in that.)  I also added a lush dazzler thingy from Creative Expressions. The piece of greyboard was painted in quin magenta which is so lush!  The flourish corner has Cosmic Shimmer Pearl glue on it.  The pearl stuff picks up a bit of the burnt edges (the mdf is cut with a laser at 3000C) and adds a bit of colour, a tip I picked up from Johnathon Lockwood.  The sentiment, from Tim Holtz, is so apropos because the flourish was done for another project and ended up on top the sentiment in the chaos of my desk!  That same chaos reigns supreme in the rest of my space.  I can’t find my journal … the irony is not lost on me! 😉Toad & Magic

Number 1 Dad

I have the most amazing Dad and he beats your dad hands down! 😉

Toad & Magic I’m in love with this galvanised steel technique that I stole from Shelly Hickox. I did the words and stars with Andy Skinner’s easy rust technique, but with a toothbrush instead of the paint spray.

Expert Opinion

Toad & Magic

This is one of the brilliant laser cut mdf products from That Craft Place.  I used acrylic paints, stencils, and PaperArtsy stamps.  I used my silhouette cameo to cut the vase, teacup, and flowers.  I painted chop sticks and highlighted the cracks from crackle medium with paint.  The little glasses are also from TCP.  At first, the scale of the glasses bothered me, but then I saw a documentary about dollhouses.  Some expert said that the differences in scale is what make dollhouses and miniatures fun and whimsical.  Who am I to argue with an expert?

Imagine

Toad & Magic

I do adore these Betty Boots (coloured with copics on TCP‘s super smooth) stamps from Creative Expressions.  I used DecoArt quin gold, patina antiquing cream, and an embossing folder to make the background.  The gears are a die from Cheery Lyn.

Been there, done that!

Toad & MagicI have seen Big Ben, but I haven’t seen the Queen in person (I did see Prince William, Princess Kate, and Prince Harry through binoculars at the Olympics whilst their cousin Princess Zara rode), nor have I ridden in a London cabbie (yet!).

This little wall cabinet was bought for the princely sum of £5 in a charity shop.  It was rather plain; painted in a plain sage colour with no distressing or other interesting additions. I painted it with DecoArts chalk paint called relic (grey) and then a second coat of everlasting (white).  I used a tip from Andy Skinner and put some hair wax on the places I wanted to sand back and expose the grey.  This is the best tip ever!  Or very close! lol

Toad & MagicI decopaged a vintage looking paper napkin onto the back of each cubby hole, using the most interesting parts of the image.  Can you spot any differences in the images from the left and right sides? 😉

Toad & MagicLastly, I traced the London with bowler hats from one of Lisa’s London stencils and filled it in with relic chalk paint.  Afterwards, whilst walking Scooter, I realised that I should have cut the stencil so that I could get it to lie flat on the cabinet and stencilled the paint – that would have given a crisper edge and the hats would look more like hats!  Lisa’s stencil is not at fault here! lol

We’d love to see your altered/mixed media projects over at Altered Eclectics.
