A project 10 years in the making…

Toad & MagicAbout 10 years, Stampers Sampler had an article about making shrines/armoires out of mini cereal boxes.  My good friend, Tammy, saved a number for me and I never had a chance to do anything with them.  I ended up throwing them out because I moved across 2 provinces, but I never forgot the idea!  Recently, Prince Charming bought  set of mini cereals and I snaffled on to them quickly! lol

I took the box apart and painted the inside with gold inka gold and the outside with black gesso.  I edged burgundy paper from the fab Christmas collection from DoCrafts with inka gold and layered it up with some pretty sepia paper from the same collection.  I added some wood laser cuts from TCP to the doors to act as handles.  The feet are flat backed pearls.

Toad & Magic

My dad loves Santa Claus.  Like, LURVES Santa Claus.  He often helps Santa out in the busy run-up to Christmas and stands in for the big guy in the village I grew up.  I could tell you tons of Santa stories involving my dad, but my favourite one goes like this.

My first Christmas, my dad dressed up in his Santa suit, visited my grandparents house where I was and a picture of Santa holding me ended up in the family photo album.  A couple of years later, I was looking at the album, tapped the picture and said ‘Daddy.’  It broke my dad’s heart.  That year, the local NYE dance sold out.  A man wanted to buy my parent’s tickets for mad money, but my dad worked out a deal where the man came over, dressed up in our Santa suit, and gave me a present on Christmas Eve.  Let me tell you it was amazing!  A few a years ago, my mum and I talked about this fab memory and I asked about the bag the presents were in…I swear it was leather.  My mum is pretty sure it was a orange bin liner!  This story is relavent…After I put the decopage Santa from Docrafts in the box…it looked empty and too far back.  I decided that I needed Santa’s sack, but what could I make it out so looked like leather?  Wax paper and alcohol ink to the rescue! lol

This fortnight’s challenge over at TCP is my favourite…Anything Goes!

Now for something completely different…

erinstewart.wordpress.comI made a card…don’t faint!  It has been months since I made a card (like July for Prince Charming’s bday).  I often tell my students that I make cards to explain my hobby because Papercrafting just confuses them, but I don’t really make them any more.  I actually really enjoyed it!  I might even make more! lol

I’ve recently become a Docrafts addict.  They’re products are simply such good value and bang on trend!  I couldn’t resist the Christmas goody bag that was jammed packed full of goodies including this decopage vintage image.  Now, totally not my thing, but this card was whipped up in about 1.5 hours which is an absolute speed record for me!  It seems rather special too if I say so myself.

This fortnight’s challenge over at That Craft Place is Christmas.  I’m so surprised I didn’t make something involving mucky fingers, but I am up to my elbows in muckiness for the November swap at the Natter Chatter page (I know it’s December, don’t tell Lorraine…shh!)

Gifts Galore

Totally multi-tasking today!  This is a project for the new challenge over at That Craft Place – Anything with a Digi sponsored by the darling All Dressed Up Digi company.  The multi-tasking part?  I’m going to send it with my other Christmas ATCs for the swap in one of favourite fb groups.  See what I did there? 😉

I embossed a greyboard ATC with a Docrafts embossing folder, painted with red and buttermilk, sanded back to show the red, and then edged in black archival ink.  I stamped the tree (no idea who made it) and coloured it and ‘I love my cuddly toys’ with copics.  I used a bit of silicone glue to give the tree some lift, added the sentiment, and covered the whole thing with a coat of DecoArts Decopage because I love the finish it gives.  Phew!  Just about got it all done in time for the challenge going live! lol

All Points Bulletin – Missing DT project

My DT project for Alter a Can over at That Craft Place 3 weeks ago never got posted.  I had that terrible bug that’s going round and felt like death.  I was able to just about get it done in time, but couldn’t get enough brain cells together to write a post about it! lol

I made the cut file on my awesome cammie for the balloon part and used Prima’s Stationer’s Desk for the patterned paper.  I used distress stains to stain chopsticks to connect to my altered can.  The altered can part is where it all went a bit pear shaped! lol

I covered a small bean can with embossing paste.  Before it set I pushed all kinds of metal embellishments like the heart with wings, the lightbulb, the leaf, and the watch that you can see into the paste.  Then I smeared paste over it all to make it white and to help hold the embellishments in place.  Now, because I was in a hurry (why do I procrastinate?) I started spraying everything with black and brown Dylusions before it was totally dry.  This was interesting…it kind of ‘melted’ the paste.  At one point I had almost the perfect colour.  Unfortunately, I didn’t walk away from the project at that point…this is something I’m working on! lol  Lastly, I used DecoArts Triple Thick spray to make it all shiny.  That turned everything slightly purple.  Again, because I didn’t wait for things to dry!  Damn procrastination!  Need to work on that after learning the point to walk away from the project.

I learned so much from this project.  Like double checking that the theme hasn’t changed whilst I wasn’t looking because it became alter anything which would have been so much easier!  And that everything takes me a long time so I should start much sooner.  LOL Seriously though, I do want to try adhering things to a can with modelling paste and using Dylusions to colour again.  I’d like to make an airship again too.

So, what project have you started and by the end hated because everything seemed to go pear shaped?

My favourite kind of challenge

Her boobies are not really that big!

Her boobies are not really that big!

This fortnight’s challenge over at That Craft Place’s Challenge Blog is ‘Anything Goes.’

I wanted to do a ‘canvas’ type thing with these fab wings from Lisa’s.  First I painted them gold DecoArts paint.  Then I used their two step crackle and brown paint.  I coloured The Pilot from DDD with copics in brown and turquoise.  To help tie the wings and the image together I swiped turquoise paint across the wings and rubbed back with the crafter’s most useful tool…a baby wipe! (I alsow rubbed and swiped turquoise on the bottle cap) I also sponged gold paint onto the wood cogs.  I  played around with a number of embellishments from That Craft Place until I was happy with both the selection and placement, including the fabulous chain.

My second project are a set of altered wooden balls I picked up from the brilliant charity shop next to Lisa’s (another reason to visit ladies!).  I forgot to take a before picture, but here’s a during picture with a coat of gesso.

Before

Before

Even after two coats of gesso and the first coat of red paint you could see the black swirls.  I thought that this might be okay, but they did disappear after a few more layers.  I added some die cut flourishes (Cheery Lyn and Marianne) to for some dimension and then started to add red paint (True Red, Primary Red, Santa Red – spot a pattern?- and my new fav, Deep Burgundy) here and there making sure to not leave any white showing.  Once I was happy with how the reds looked, I added splashes of gold .  In one spot, I did a kind of zed shaped squiggle to hide an oops.  I prefered that look and will do that shape in the future.  I also did the whole swipe and rub back thing with black paint…especially around the flourishes.  Lastly, I covered it with Triple Thick Glaze which made them look like glass.  These £2 charity shop finds are now comfortable on my mantle!

Cute as a …

Today is my very first post for That Craft Place as a Design Team member.  My previous post told you all about how excited I was about being asked to be part of it.  This fortnight’s challenge is Buttons.  When I found out, all I could think was ‘Cute as a button.’

Wilson the Woofie

Wilson the Woofie

Rut Roh?

Rut Roh?

It’s an atc where the bone tilts Wilson’s head.  I coloured Wilson with copics and cut him with my silhouette (Wilson’s head is cut separately from the body for this).  I also cut the atc on the silhouette and used a newspaper pattern from the silhouette shop.  I used a font from the silhouette shop as well.  Stacey posted a video about how to faux stitching on the silhouette which taught me how to get things to print without using the silhouette pens.  Always good to learn new things! I then used vintage photo distress ink on Ditzie Designs coffee rings stamp to stamp over the top.  I also inked the edges in vp distress ink.  I used DecoArts Satin Varnish over everything because I love the texture it leaves.  I also used alcohol inks to age a white button from my stash and attached it with glossy accents.  I used glossy accents on the eyes and nose to highlight those spots.

I’m a dog person (although I did have a 7 year fling with some cats in Canada).  Not quite two years ago, a black and white terror came into my home and stole my heart.  You can see him above on the banner.  Scooter has grown into a lovely dog who is incredibly well behaved at home and absolutely barking mad on walks.  I do reckon that since he’s so good at home I can put up with the nutso hour on the walks.  So, are you a cat or dog person?

Stop the Presses!!!!!

I have big major remarkable significant earthshaking monumental news!

I am on That Craft Place’s Design Team!

I’ve never really been fussed about being on one until last December’s DT call.  I wasn’t ready to apply, but made it my New Year’s resolution to at least apply…never dreaming I’d get on it.  I also thought it was a once a year thing and had until December to get good enough!  Anyroads, along comes the DT call and I thought ‘what the heck, let’s give it a go.’  When Erin Sparkles emailed me I thought it was the rejection one because it started off about the overwhelming response!

I thought I’d share the amazing box of goodies I got.  All of this, and more!, is available from my favourite shop.
